
Vahagn Khachaturyan Elected Armenia’s President
The Armenian National Assembly, in a second round of voting today, elected Vahagn Khachaturyan Armenia’s fifth president.
71 MPs, all members of the pro-government Civil Contract faction, voted in favor of Khachaturyan, who had been serving as the country’s Minister of High-Tech Industry.
Opposition Hayastan and With Honor MPs boycotted the vote.
Khachaturyan, an economist by profession, held the post of Yerevan mayor from 1992 to 1996, and was a member of the National Assembly until 1999.
