Protestors Demand Justice for "Tale of Terror" Victims
A group of protestors gathered outside the RA Prosecutor General’s office in Yerevan earlier today, demanding justice for those involved in the scandalous story recently covered in Hetq entitled “Tale of Terror: Young Newlywed Seeks Justice for 10 Months of Cruel Mistreatment”.
One of the victims, Mariam Gevorgyan, joined the protestors along with her father Hamazasp.
Mariam thanked all those who had come out in support of her cause and promised that she and her family would not rest until justice was served.
Protestor Anashen Navarsardyan said it “was the duty of every woman to participate in such demonstrations when the rights of other women are trampled underfoot.”
Another demonstrator, film director Tigran Khzmalyan, said that he wasn’t at the rally in his capacity as a member of the Sardarapat Initiative, but rather as a common citizen. He said that this was a struggle not just for women’s rights but for all victimized individuals.
“I wouldn’t call those in power to be men, but rather predators that have no gender, no nationality. We can only expect justice from the just. This is a show of our resistance and that we will no longer remain silent in the face of such wickedness. We see all and will remember all,” Khzmalyan said.
Women’s Resource Center President Lara Aharonyan said they were protesting the fact that Mariam’s former husband Davit had been pardoned and demanding that he and his mother, Haykanoush Mikayelyan receive their just punishment.
Aharonyan said they would continue the struggle until justice is served.
“Mariam must not feel alone in this. This problem isn’t hers alone but an issue facing the entire Armenian society. Mariam has found the inner strength to speak up but there are countless women who have been victimized,” Aharonyan added.
The Coalition Against Violence Towards Women has sent a letter to RA President Sargsyan and General Prosecutor Aghvan Hovsepyan, urging them to closely monitor the court case.
