Galust Sahakyan Elected President of Armenia's Parliament
Armenia’s National Assembly today elected Republican Party MP Galust Sahakyan as its next president.
In a secret ballot Sahakyan garnered 101 votes, beating out his only rival Armenian National Congress (HAK) faction MP Hrant Bagratyan who received a mere three.
The vote was boycotted by MPs from the Heritage Party, HAK and the ARF. HAK MP Nikol Pashinyan did cast a vote despite his party’s stance, arguing that he felt it was his moral obligation.
Pashinyan was joined by Heritage Party faction MP Alexander Arzoumanyan in voting for Bagratyan, a former prime minister of Armenia.
Arzoumanyan also stated that he felt a moral imperative to vote for Bagratyan, who was self-nominated.
