“According to the law, the Yerevan mayor, the deputy mayors and the City Council, must grant interviews with the press at least bi-monthly. There have been no such meetings with the press,” stated Arman Vardanyan, leader of the Prosperous Armenia Party faction on the Yerevan City Council.
The PAP official stated that reminded the mayor of his obligation in this respect and that the mayor’s reply was, ‘OK, let’s organize a meeting’. “It’s the law; there is no need to organize such a meeting. The law isn’t being followed,” stated Mr. Vardanyan.
Mr. Vardanyan said that the party would demand that such a meeting with the press take place in 2010. “There are issues out there that need to be addressed in a public format by the mayor and his deputies. Otherwise the perception will be that these issues are being discussed behind closed doors and that we are shying away from public scrutiny,” noted Mr. Vardanyan.
