Gyumri’s Municipal Council, by a vote of 24-8, today elected Vardges Samsonyan mayor of Armenia’s second largest city.

Samsonyan was the mayoral candidate of an alliance lead by outgoing Gyumri Mayor Samvel Balasanyan.

Voter turnout in Gyumri in the October 17 municipal council election was a mere 33%.

The Balasanyan Alliance won 9,631 votes, followed by Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract Party with 7,786 votes.

Civil Contract Municipal Council members voted for Samsonyan today according to an earlier agreement reached with the Balasanyan Alliance.

The agreement stipulates that the two Gyumri Deputy Mayors would be from the Civil Contract Party.
