Yerevan Not Talking with Ankara to Normalize Relations, Says Armenian Foreign Minister
Armenian Foreign Minister Ara Ayvazyan stated today that the Armenian government is not engaged in any official talks with Turkey.
Ayvazyan, at a meeting today of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, sought to clarify the matter following recent remarks made by Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan on Armenian Public TV.
Grigoryan, during the TV show, said that if Armenia is moving towards the opening of transit routes in the region, as envisaged by the November 7, 2020 Artsakh ceasefire declaration, certain changes in Armenia’s diplomatic approach must be made.
“I must restate that Armenia's official position on foreign policy is voiced by the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister," Ayvazyan said, adding that Armenia, since its independence, has always sought to normalize relations with Ankara.
“Our really honest initiative to normalize relations without preconditions was not reciprocated by official Ankara," Ayvazyan said.
"In order for there to be real peace in the region, we expect Turkey to engage in serious, fundamental talks and to halt its aggressive policy towards Armenia, and its elimination of hostile actions," Ayvazyan said.
